The upcoming Detective Pikachu might launch its own Pokemon live-action movie universe. The movie, which is based on the video game of the same name, is the first time that the world of Pokemon has been translated to live-action. Although there have been previous Pokemon movies, almost all of them have been directly based upon or taken place in the world of the anime series. The anime shares a similar visual style with the games and the appearance of the various pocket monsters is a direct creation of their video game counterpart....

Celebrating video game titles that are made at least in part in Canada and internationally, the Canadian Video Game Awards 2016 have now revealed the winners in 20 different categories at their sixth annual event at the Palais de Congres in downtown Montreal. Announced from a list of over 50 finalists, a group of industry experts from across Canada voted on the winners in all but two categories - where fans decided who would triumph, instead....

Inspired both by the original Stephen King novel and the 1989 film directed by Mary Lambert, the new Pet Sematary was a hit at the box office, grossing over $112 million worldwide, against a budget of just $21 million. Pet Sematary was directed by the team of Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, who were previously responsible for the trippy horror film, Starry Eyes, as well as several episodes of the third season of Scream, based on the popular Wes Craven slasher saga....

Disney+ has crossed a major milestone in terms of paid subscribers. Disney CEO Bob Chapek announced during the company’s annual meeting of shareholders that Disney+ now has over 100 million paying subscribers, just 16 months after the service first launched. In a press release, Chapek explained that the success of Disney+ so far is inspiring the company to be “even more ambitious” with its streaming media platform going forward. Disney reported its fiscal Q1 2020 earnings this afternoon, offering our first look at the performance of its new Disney+ streaming service. In the earnings release, the company revealed that Disney+ currently has over 28 million subscribers following its November launch. Apple, on the other hand, hasn’t offered any details on Apple TV+ subscribers. Disney+ debuted to the public on November 12, and announced the next day that it already had acquired 10 million subscribers....

UPDATE: Read our breakdown of the Artemis Fowl teaser trailer. - Disney has released the first trailer for its Artemis Fowl movie adaptation. The film is (of course) based on the fantasy adventure book series of the same name, which was created by Eoin Colfer in 2001 and currently encompasses eight novels in total (published over the span of eleven years). A big screen version of the Artemis Fowl franchise have been in development pretty much ever since the original book was published; though, it wasn’t until Disney and The Weinstein Company got involved in 2013 - before Disney parted ways with TWC in the wake of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault scandal last year - that things really started to pick up on the project....

Disney’s Mulan star has sparked controversy by supporting the Hong Kong police. The new live-action remake of the classic Disney tale is set for a March 2020 release, and although the animated film didn’t reach the same heights as other animated Disney films from that era, Mulan remains a favorite to many. While Battlefield V will feature three different ways to play the first-person shooter, it will all be connected by a shared progression system called The Company. DICE unveiled their latest entry in their Battlefield series today, and while the single-player and multiplayer components are returning in familiar ways, they also showed off a brand new cooperative experience called Combined Arms. All three offerings are very different in how they’ll play, but they will all feed into each other in terms of progression - which is all based around unlocking cosmetics....

All checks indicate they have, which would be a first for the puritan California-based gadget maker that likes to keep things under control in the App Store. ZDNet has a story about SugarSugar Dating App somehow making it through Apple’s stringent review process and launching on the iPhone on June 1. The app is a mobile client to SugarSugar.com, which advertises itself as the “leading sugar dating website”. They also say the app helps one seek “mutually beneficial” arrangements with other users, a telling tongue-in-cheek definition treading the fine line between dating and escorting, if not worse....

The popular gamer-focused messaging platform “Discord” is finally working on an update for its macOS app that brings full support to Macs with M1 chip and later. Although the update is not yet officially available to the public, it can be downloaded as a beta app for now. As noted by some users on Reddit, Discord recently released a new version of its “Canary” app – which is basically a beta version of Discord in which the company tests new features before the public release – that runs natively on M1 Macs....
