Detective Pikachu has just fallen short of the tally required for it to have become the highest grossing video game movie of all time. A loose adaptation of the Nintendo DS puzzle game of the same name, its story saw a young man named Tim searching for his detective father, missing and presumed dead. He teams up with his father’s amnesiac Pikachu partner, who unlike regular Pokémon can inexplicably speak normally but only to Tim’s ears, to look into his disappearance....

Apple appears to have finally dropped Google Maps from iCloud.com, replacing it with its own in-house maps almost two years after removing Google Maps from iOS and most of its other products. Apple started slowly rolling out the feature to its iCloud beta site for select users earlier this year before pulling it, but it now seems to have replaced Google for all users of iCloud.com’s Find My iPhone feature (pictured above)....

The still-alive Die Hard 6 has hired The Conjuring duo Chad and Carey Hayes to perform a script rewrite. Bruce Willis just last month confirmed the long-planned Die Hard sequel is still moving forward at 20th Century Fox. The plan at one time was to make Die Hard 6 a prequel/sequel hybrid, with a new actor coming aboard as a young John McClane. But who knows if that is still the direction producers wish to go....

Disney’s purchase of Fox means the X-Men can join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that wasn’t the motivating factor for the Mouse House. Today, Disney officially bought 20th Century Fox for $52.4 billion, effectively changing the face of the Hollywood landscape. While we won’t see the full ramifications for this deal for some time, one thing’s for certain: many Marvel fans will be overjoyed at the number of characters coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including any number of the X-Men....

It’s no secret that Apple News+ isn’t Apple’s first foray into digital magazines. In 2011, the company debuted Newsstand, which pre-dates this week’s announcements. A new comparison video, however, shows the striking similarities between the Newsstand announcement in 2011 and the Apple News+ announcement in 2019. Scott Forstall, who was an Apple senior vice president at the time, introduced Newsstand in 2011. Forstall pitched Newsstand as the future of digital news, with publishers maintaining their own apps that were offered through the Newsstand store....

Disney+ has a ton of movies joining the service over the next two years, many of which were surprisingly missing from the launch lineup. Disney’s new streaming platform already has a massive library, filled with movies and TV shows from the Mouse House’s various production companies - now including 20th Century Fox - but quite a few properties are still missing. The service is packed with its in-house content, ranging from 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to some of its more modern hits, like Zootopia and Moana from 2016....

Doctor Doom movie writer Noah Hawley says there is a sense of “uncertainty” about the project considering the looming Disney-Fox merger. It came as a surprise last year when it was reported Disney was looking to acquire 20th Century Fox. Of course, many Marvel fans wondered what the potential merger would mean for Fox’s ongoing X-Men film series, since the rights to the mutants and Fantastic Four would revert back to Marvel Studios....

Musician-actor Harry Styles has entered talks to play Prince Eric in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of its animated feature, The Little Mermaid. Assuming that he signs on, he will join a cast that includes his fellow singer-performer Halle Bailey as the mermaid Ariel, in addition to Melissa McCarthy as the sea witch Ursula. A live-action retelling of Disney’s animated 1989 feature (itself, adapted from Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale), The Little Mermaid is being directed by Rob Marshall from a script by his Mary Poppins Returns writer David Magee and an earlier draft by Jane Goldman (Kingsman)....

It’s been almost ten years since James Cameron’s Avatar first delighted moviegoers and then went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time. The science-fiction film starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver took audiences to the far away planet of Pandora in the Alpha Centauri star system and introduced us to the tribe of aliens called Na’vi. Yet even though the world Cameron created is wondrous on its own, it’s the film’s use of stereoscopic 3D filmmaking that really allowed viewers to immerse themselves like never before....

Developer Ben Guild posted alleged screenshots of Google’s upcoming Maps for iOS app. He claimed the photos show the alpha version of the app that is “speedy” and supports the iPhone 5. Further details in the report assert that Maps for iOS is vector-based and supports two-finger rotation. The photos do not show anything too mind-boggling. However, if real, they show Google is actively working on the app which many hope is coming....

On the weekend, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said that Apple is planning a new entry-level M2 MacBook Pro for some time this year. Now, industry sources inside a supply chain believe the company will launch this new Mac in early March, potentially during Apple’s rumored event. According to a paywalled story by DigiTimes (via MacRumors), Apple plans to launch this M2 MacBook Pro as soon as early next month. While analysts already reported Apple’s plans regarding an event to launch a new iPhone SE, iPad Air, and a new Mac, DigiTimes believes that this new Mac is going to be the entry-level M2 MacBook Pro....

Disney is banning the Los Angeles Times from attending advanced screenings of their movies. As a southern California newspaper, in addition to publishing film criticism, the Times frequently covers Disneyland Resort and Disney California Adventure, as well as how both parks affect the city of Anaheim. And in September, they published an article that painted Disney in a bad light, and the Mouse House challenged their outlook. The article posited that Disney Parks & Resorts wasn’t paying its fair share to the city....

Disney’s streaming service, Disney+, will now launch a week earlier in the UK and Western Europe. The new streamer has been steadily building up its subscription base since launching in North America this past November. So far, the future looks bright for the service and its content. In the months leading up to the launch of Disney+, much was said regarding the ongoing competition from streaming champ Netflix, as well as other key services launching from Apple, HBO and NBCUniversal, to name but a few....

It’s been rumored to be in development for over a year, and now Capcom has registered a domain name for Devil May Cry 5. The website’s URL address, devilmaycry5.com, doesn’t leave much to the imagination as to what the title for the next game in the action series could be called. The news comes one day after yet another rumor listed Devil May Cry 5 as being in development. Interestingly, this domain registration could lend credence to some other potential reveals since Bloodborne 2, a new SOCOM title, a PlayStation 4 port of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, and a new BioShock game for PlayStation VR were also listed as part of the rumor....

Disney have released the teaser trailer for their live-action Dumbo movie. First released in 1941, the animated Dumbo tells the story of the baby elephant with enlarged ears who, with the help of his friend, Timothy Mouse, learns to fly. Dumbo is Disney’s shortest animated movie, at just 64 minutes, but the story has been expanded upon in the new live-action version, set to be released in March, 2019. Directed by Tim Burton, from a screenplay by Ehren Kruger, Dumbo celebrates differences and focuses on the themes of family and dreams coming true; values that are inherent to the house of mouse....

This morning at IFA in Berlin, DJI announced its latest creation for smartphones: the DJI Osmo Mobile. Today’s news comes just a week after it took the wraps off the upgraded Osmo+. DJI is focusing on smartphone users with a passion for cinematography on this release. The integrated stabilization system tracks a subject with just a touch of your iPhone or Android’s screen, eliminating shaky footage. Like the Osmo+ before it, DJI is leaning heavily on its Go app to capture different types of content....
