The Tim Burton-directed Alice in Wonderland was the billion dollar-grossing film that kicked off Disney’s practice of reimagining stories that it had previously adapted into 2D animated films, as modern live-action/CGI features instead. It wasn’t until Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella and especially Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book that Disney’s live-action fairy tale re-tellings began generating widespread critical acclaim, in addition to doing big business at the global box office. Next month’s live-action Beauty and the Beast musical aims to keep the Mouse House’s winning streak alive in this respect, as does Disney’s live-action take on the Chinese legend, Mulan....

However, a developer managed to use an exploit found in iOS 16 to change the default font of the system without jailbreak. After receiving antitrust approval from the U.S. Justice Department, new analysis suggests that Disney could hold as much as 40 percent of the domestic box office should their bid for 21st Century Fox’s movie and TV assets go through. The proposed deal is worth more than $71 billion, and would make the company that already owns Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars even more dominant than it already is. While Walt Disney Studios has already seen its films take the top three spots of 2018, so far, with Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Incredibles 2, the addition of Fox’s assets would give the company access to other highly popular franchises like Deadpool, X-Men, Avatar, and Fantastic Four – not to mention the more prestige films of Fox Searchlight, which has won three of the last five Academy Awards for Best Picture....

Disney releases the full Aladdin movie trailer, offering a new look at the live-action retelling directed by Guy Ritchie. Aladdin is the second of Disney’s live-action adaptations from their animated classics library to hit theaters this year. The first will be Dumbo, directed by Tim Burton, which debuts later this month. Then, the street rat will return to theaters - this time in live-action - in May, before Jon Favreau’s The Lion King follows two months later in July....

Cameron Cuffe and Jonah Hauer-King are the latest actors to test for the role of Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid. With Disney Animation Renaissance hits Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King having all gotten a makeover in live-action (or photorealistic CGI, in The Lion King’s case), it was only a matter of time before Disney’s animated adaptation of The Little Mermaid - which kicked off said Renaissance - followed suit....

The debate on whether ‘peak iPhone‘ is a temporary glitch or a longer-term problem continues, with Deutsche Bank analyst Sherri Scribner arguing the case for the latter view. Business Insider posted a graph suggesting that Apple’s year-on-year growth not only tracks that of the overall smartphone market – which is on a steady decline toward zero – but actually underperforms the market as a whole. In 2009-2010, during the War in Afghanistan, a group of soldiers calling themselves The Kill Team murdered no fewer than three innocent Afghan civilians. The circumstances that led these young men to commit wartime atrocities were documented in Dan Krauss’ award-winning 2013 documentary, The Kill Team. Six years later, Krauss returns to the tragic and disturbing story with a feature film dramatization of “The Maywand District Killings,” as the incident came to be known....

Devil May Cry 5 is on the verge of arriving on consoles, so the game’s publisher has dropped a new trailer to promote the title. Diablo Immortal, a massive multiplayer online action roleplay game, is now available for both iOS and Android. Some regions got early access, but the game is now available in most parts of the world. The bad news is that it’s a freemium title, but Blizzard says that the “core game experience” will always be free … The game has been a very long time coming, Blizzard first announcing it back in 2018....

Walt Disney Studios’ deal to acquire certain 21st Century Fox assets is expected to close in early March of this year. When reports of Fox’s TV and film divisions being up for sale first emerged, it didn’t take long for Disney to be viewed as the frontrunner to buy these resources. The two studios originally agreed on a $54 billion price tag, but negotiations with Comcast drove up Disney’s final winning bid to $71 billion....
