The copyright status of Steamboat Willie, as well as much of Disney’s very early output, has been a topic of legal contention for decades. On January 1, 2019, every book, film, and song published in 1923 will fall out of copyright protection, or at least that is what will happen if further attempts to extend copyright are not put forward - but that probably won’t happen. As noted by a spokesperson for the Motion Picture Association of America (via Ars Technica), who themselves had lobbied heavily for copyright extension, “While copyright term has been a longstanding topic of conversation in policy circles, we are not aware of any legislative proposals to address the issue....

Software developer Winocm has managed to port the core elements of Apple’s iOS operating system to non-Apple devices. This core is known as the “XNU Kernel” and this is what Apple developed over a decade ago to create the foundation of OS X (and later, iOS). As can be seen in the image above from Steven Troughton-Smith, the system is successfully running on a Nokia N900 smartphone… The port does not include any of iOS’s or OS X’s user-interface elements and cannot run as a functional operating system, but it includes many of the system’s core features....

Hollywood’s landscape will change very soon as Walt Disney Studios’ acquisition of 21st Century Fox film and TV assets has been approved in Brazil. Fox first agreed to sell their movie, TV, and additional assets to Disney back in December 2017 and have been working toward completing the deal ever since.
