Based on the original live-action musical distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures way back in 2007, production on the still forthcoming sequel Enchanted 2 has been in the offing for quite some time now. As previously reported, the new movie is being written under the working title of Disenchanted, though little in the way of any other substantive information has been readily forthcoming - despite the fact that the movie was initially announced in 2010.
Featuring Amy Adams (Arrival), Patrick Dempsey (Bridget Jones’s Baby), and James Marsden (Westworld) as its three leads, the first Enchanted movie raked in a grand total of $340 million at the worldwide box office, making it into something of a contemporary musical classic for many Disney fans. As for Disenchanted, the latest word has a brand new director taking the reins of the project moving forward.
According to THR, after several years spent in pre-production, Disenchanted is finally moving forward with director Adam Shankman (Hairspray) taking over for previous lead helmer Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses), with a the first day of shooting on the new film scheduled to begin during the summer of 2017. It is still unknown at this time whether or not the first draft of the film’s script - originally penned by J. David Stern and David N. Weiss (Shrek 2) - will be used or not.
Currently, the film is planned to be set ten years after Enchanted - no doubt to mirror the actual time that elapsed between the release of the first film and the start of production on the second - wherein Giselle (Adams) is questioning her own happiness and happily ever after, with drastic repercussions on both the real world and the animated fantasy realm of Andalasia. The only thing that remains to be seen is how many members of the original cast will return in Disenchanted proper.
Disney musical super-fans will undoubtedly be excited to hear that production is finally moving forward on Disenchanted, as the original feature film provided said viewers with a contemporary classic to match the likes of such timeless masterpieces of the mid-twentieth century as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Sleeping Beauty. For everyone else, perhaps now would be as good a time as any to see the original Enchanted before the sequel ostensibly makes its way to theaters within the next couple of years - and (possibly) becomes another must-see production from the world-renowned film studio.
