Disney Parks have unveiled the name of the village guests will get to explore at the forthcoming Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge theme park as Black Spire Outpost. Having snapped up the rights to the famous franchise, Disney quickly set about planning a Star Wars inspired addition to their resorts and in 2015, it was announced that theme parks would be opening at both California’s Disneyland and Walt Disney World in Florida. Construction began roughly one year later and both parks are set to officially open in 2019.
A number of details have been released about Galaxy’s Edge during its construction. The parks will feature a Millennium Falcon attraction, an immersive cantina experience with a Mos Eisley feel and merchandise stalls run by aliens of the same species as Watto from The Phantom Menace. Fascinatingly, Galaxy’s Edge is set to be an immersive experience like no other, as guests’ performances at certain attractions will reportedly impact their experiences in other areas of the park. It has also been revealed that Galaxy’s Edge is set on a brand new planet to the Star Wars universe, Batuu. This previously unseen location has since been confirmed to appear in an upcoming Thrawn novel.
Disney have now announced exactly where on Batuu Galaxy’s Edge is located: Black Spire Outpost. The village’s name was revealed at yesterday’s Galactic Nights event at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Disney’s description of this new Star Wars locale reads as follows:
The largest settlement on the planet Batuu, Black Spire Outpost is an infamous stop for traders, adventurers, and smugglers traveling around the Outer Rim and Wild Space. Off the beaten path, this outpost has become a haven for the galaxy’s most colorful — and notorious — characters. Widely known for the petrified remains of its once towering ancient trees, the spires now stand guard across the river valleys and plains and have long captured the imagination of travelers to this planet. To the first settlers, these petrified spires became more than just landmarks; they became the heart of the outpost itself.
Although the description stops short of calling Black Spire Outpost a wretched hive of scum and villainy, it certainly seems to have a lot in common with Tatooine’s Mos Eisley Spaceport. It has already been revealed that the parks’ eating areas will be similar in style to that famous hangout and now it appears as if Disney are going for the same kind of lawless, unpredictable vibe. Perhaps that explains what the Millennium Falcon is doing there. From a design point of view, it’ll be very interesting to see how the petrified tree spires described above are executed in the actual park itself.
Many might have assumed that Disney would’ve been content with simply announcing the name of the planet Galaxy’s Edge would be based on but the fact that they have now delved deeper into the location’s fictional lore and provided an exact location demonstrates the level of immersion the company are going for with their new parks. Evidently, the Mouse House are keen to integrate Batuu into wider Star Wars mythology and it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to see Black Spire Outpost mentioned, or perhaps even appear in, in a future movie.
