Disney+ is finally here! The new streaming service features an extensive lineup of content from Disney, 20th Century Fox, Lucasfilm, Marvel, National Geographic, and Pixar. In addition to showing old content, the video platform will also be featuring its own original movies and TV shows. We’re here to look at the latter of these now.
While some of Disney’s latest TV series will debut on launch day, others will be have their premiere over the next couple of years. Get ready to binge-watch some of the streaming service’s newest classics. Here are 10 of the new series on, or coming to, Disney+.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series
We’re all in this together!
The hit 2006 Disney Channel Original movie known as High School Musical is getting its own TV series. Though the first episode already aired as a preview on ABC, Disney Channel, and Freeform on November 8, the next episode of the series will be streaming to Disney+ upon its release.
This mockumentary follows the theater students of the fictional East High School who are putting on a stage production of the original movie.
The series has already been renewed for a second season.
The Mandalorian
This space Western TV series, set in the Star Wars universe, is also set to debut on the Disney+ launch day.
Taking place five years after 1983’s Return of the Jedi, the eight-episode first season follows the journeys of a Mandalorian bounty hunter.
Filming for Season 2 has already begun, so it is totally okay to get invested in the first season. After the premiere, the following episodes are released in weekly installments.
Diary Of A Female President
This comedy TV series is set to premiere in 2020. Diary of a Female President follows the journal of a Cuban-American girl who navigates the craziness of middle school as she works toward becoming the president of the United States.
The first season will consist of 10 episodes, and actress Tess Romero will play the starring character. Gina Rodriguez will portray the adult version of Romero’s character, who is stuck in the middle of a busy presidential campaign.
The Falcon And The Winter Soldier
This Marvel miniseries, set to debut in late 2020, will consist of six episodes that take place directly after the events of Avengers: Endgame.
While few details have been released, we do know that Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan will be reprising their titular roles. We also know that filming officially began in Atlanta on November 4, 2019, and that Peggy Carter’s niece, Sharon Carter, will be getting a spotlight in the series.
We’re more than ready for the action.
Monsters At Work
Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. is getting its own web series spin-off. This 2020 show, which is set six months after the original movie, follows a mechanic named Tylor Tuskmon, who dreams of following in the footsteps of his heroes Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan.
Billy Crystal and John Goodman are set to reprise their roles as Mike and Sully, while Ben Feldman will be playing the new starring monster. Beloved characters including the Yeti, Celia, and Roz are also set to return to the series.
Loki
If you can’t get enough of Thor’s sneakiest villain, you’re in luck.
Tom Hiddleston will be reprising his role as Loki in a series that is set to debut in early 2021. The show will follow the version of Loki who nabbed the Space Stone in Avengers: Endgame. Additionally, the series will link up with the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie.
Loki is in development now, however, filming won’t begin until early 2020.
WandaVision
If you’re wishing for a little more Marvel, you’ll be happy to know that Scarlet Witch and Vision are receiving their own original series on Disney+ in early 2021. Marvel announced that it was developing the six-episode series in 2018. It will feature a different vibe than Marvel shows, by merging the feels of a “Marvel epic” with that of a “classic sitcom.”
It’s also worth noting that the show will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame and tie into the aforementioned Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Lizzie McGuire
This iconic drama-comedy series, which aired on the Disney Channel from 2001 to 2004, will be getting a Disney+ revival.
The original series (starring Hillary Duff as the titular character) followed a thirteen-year-old girl who dealt with the ups and downs of junior high. The sequel series will follow Lizzie at the age of 30, working in New York City as an apprentice to a decorator.
Duff is set to reprise her role, and filming began in New York in October 2019.
Love, Simon
Based on the film of the same name, Love, Simon is a rom-com TV series that focuses on a student named Victor who is new to Creekwood High School. As Victor deals with issues at home, he also figures out who he is and reaches out to Simon — the titular character of the original film — for help.
The movie began shooting in L.A. in August 2019, although no firm release date for the series has been announced. Nick Robinson will be reprising his role as Simon.
What If…?
Though the list of upcoming Disney+ programming continues on, we’re ending out here by looking at the Marvel anthology series known as What If…?.
This animated series, which is set to contain 23 episodes, will look at what would have happened if certain major moments in the Marvel series played out differently.
What If…? will have many original cast members voicing their animated counterparts. Chadwick Boseman will play Black Panther, Hayley Atwell will portray Peggy Carter, Christ Hemsworth will take on Thor, and Samuel L. Jackson will voice Nick Fury.
The series is expected to premiere in mid-2021.
