When faced with the direcTV – too many active locations problems, you should try to check your location limits, reset the Genie DVR, detach your cables from the Genie-mini, replace the minis entirely, and reset the client or check if the error is from the jacks and ports.

What exactly is DirecTV?

Direct tv is one of the main cable providers in the US. They are based in California and have been around since June 1994. They are one of the largest program distributors in the US and 2021, they were acquired by the company- AT&T. They grant you access to a lot of your favorite live TV shows, movies, etc. DirecTV can be used on more than one device just like other user-friendly streaming platforms.

Can you use DirecTV on more than one device simultaneously?

DirecTV allows its users to use an account on just two devices at the same time although up to five devices can be used simultaneously for DirecTV regular.

What causes the “too many locations” problem?

We already established that DirecTV allows two devices to use the same account for streaming and it goes up to 5 devices for DirecTV regular. If those multiple devices are in too many different active locations, DirecTV won’t let you stream your media normally and would show the “too many locations” alert. This error message, although quite annoying and disturbingly abrupt, isn’t something that you should panic about as it can be solved in 15 minutes or less. If this error message isn’t given attention though, it could ruin your streaming experience altogether and stop you from enjoying your favorite series and movies.

What to do when you see the “too many active locations” error

Count the number of active locations

The first thing you should do is to crosscheck if there are too many active locations by counting them. If you happen to be using the Genie DVR, it uses up to three locations just from the central unit. If you have three mini locations already, it could be what is causing the message to appear. You need to turn off one of the locations before trying to switch on another one.

What if I have the right amount of active locations?

If you check and you have the right amount of active locations and you’re still getting this message, you can try resetting the main Genie DVR. All you have to do is check for the reset button behind or at the side of the unit and push it. Wait about 8-10 minutes for the reset to be complete and then your problem should be solved.

Inspect your ports and jacks

The dilemma may arise from bad ports or jacks. The large number of cables connected to the units oftentimes makes the jacks lose. You need to inspect and make sure that all the jacks are in the corresponding ports. if by chance they are wrongly placed, you would need to reconnect them in the right order to make sure they aren’t the cause of the message.

Change your mini-units

If the error message doesn’t disappear after cross-checking your genie unit to ensure the right amount of active locations is present, you need to replace your mini-unit. It may be the faulty mini causing the issue. Just order a new Genie unit from the DirecTV website.

Try unplugging your cables

Doing this would disconnect all the active locations temporarily which would automatically allow you to continue watching your favorite movies and TV shows. All you have to do is to unplug the cables behind the Genie-mini unit, wait a couple of minutes and plug them back. The system would refresh automatically.

Try a client refresh

Performing a client reset would be the best solution if you are trying to link the Genie-DVR to the client. All you need to do to reset the client is remove and reinsert the power cords periodically. Then reconnect to the location and observe if your error message still appears.

Check for faulty wires

If you try unplugging and replugging your cables and the problem persists, it might be that your cables are damaged and need replacement to clear the error message. Just order new ones from the DirecTV website.

The number of users online complaining about this same error code would make you think the problem is a complex one. Luckily it just takes some troubleshooting and quick fixes to solve the problem.
