Ahead of May 23’s big reveal of Battlefield V, developers at DICE are teasing some big changes to gameplay and a whole new setting when the game hits shelves later this year.

While details around Battlefield are still a little sketchy, it hasn’t stopped developers leaving a trail of breadcrumbs to keep players excited about the next game in the war-torn franchise. 2016’s Battlefield 1 was praised for its WWI setting, but it sounds like the series is preparing for another change of scenery in this year’s game.

The official Battlefield Twitter posted a series of tweets that outlined what is coming back to Battlefield and what will be new in No. 5.

While devs aren’t revealing the mysterious new setting just yet, the Twitterverse suggested the likes of Vietnam or the Korea War, however, most expect the franchise to once again return to WWII but in a whole new way. Considering that this game is expected to be a sequel to Battlefield 1, it seems logical that the series jumps to WWII, but the general consensus is that there are more interesting places to visit in the long history of war. Who knows, maybe Battlefield could take an apocalyptic leap into the future or even head to space like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare?

Elsewhere, Battlefield V is aiming to nudge ahead of close rival Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 by keeping its story mode and bringing back the popular War Stories. Given that Black Ops 4 has controversially axed single-player in favor of a new multiplayer experience, the classic campaign mode could definitely work in Battlefield V’s favor.

Finally, there are promises of some major gameplay overhauls, hyping that viewers need to keep their eyes peeled at the upcoming game reveal. Either way, it sounds like DICE wants to pull out all the stops to top Treyarch’s recent unveiling of Black Ops 4. If Battlefield V can deliver on all these promises, it could be a close call between the two shooters in 2018’s big gaming battle.

Whether a Call of Duty or a Battlefield fan, both long-running series are clearly moving with the times instead of just relying on tired mechanics and a namesake to shift copies. Fans already expect Battlefield V to include an ever-popular Battle Royale mode, but it looks to be just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what’s new in the latest chapter. Under the slogan, “the tides of war are changing… can you feel it?” DICE is pulling no punches in its marketing campaign for Battlefield V, however, gamers will have to wait just a little bit longer to see what’s really going on under the hood of the sharp-shooting series.
