Players of video game developer Bungie’s first-person shooter Destiny are undoubtedly well aware by now of the studios’ disappointing plans for DLC content in 2016, namely that there will be series special events and microtransactions released over the course of year two instead of meaty story content and expansions. Whether you’re a fan of such past live happenings such as last month’s Sparrow Racing League or the the Festival of the Lost Halloween-themed event from last October, players invested in The Taken King have had plenty of time to assess the merits of the mythic science fiction title going forward over the course of what has comprised year two thus far.
Nevertheless, Bungie has just announced the next special event of to send off still-active Guardians the world over into the new year with another holiday themed update to match the aforementioned autumnal bacchanal of last fall.
According to the latest Bungie Weekly Update, the next year two event will come in the form of Crimson Days, which will last the entire week of February 9th, 2015, in order to coincide with Valentine’s Day festivities taking place in the real world. In the update posted by Bungie, the Tower will be decked out to the nines various shades of red and white, with players invited to take part in the in-game festivities referred to as the “brave ritual.”
Guardians who so choose to take part in the festivities surrounding the Crimson Days event will be made privy to a brand new two-by-two Crucible mode called Crimson Doubles. The gameplay featured will reportedly change up the basic design and mechanics of the featured mission type to invite co-operative play with someone who matches your play-style with a knowing intimacy, thereby matching the spirit of Crimson Days and its real-world counterpart.
Given the fact that Crimson Days appears to be falling in thematic line with past special events that players have witnessed over the course of year two, Bungie might not win a lot of overly enthusiastic praise with this latest batch of micro-content. Then again, perhaps the celebrated week will provide Destiny players a chance to play the game with a significant other, and bond over a shared past-time and hobby. That is, if they have their own TVs, live accounts, consoles, and a copy of the game. No local (splitscreen/LAN) social play for you in this take on Valentine’s Day.
